Top Stories 2012: Stamford Man Accidentally Shoots Self

STAMFORD, Conn. — The following is the eighth of 10 stories The Stamford Daily Voice has chosen to recap the year that was in Stamford. The stories are not ranked in any order. In early September, a 22-year-old Stamford man accidentally killed himself when a .45 caliber pistol he owned went off.

The victim, Marcus Dixon, had removed the magazine from the weapon, and thought the chamber was empty when it went off. The bullet struck him in the head and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

The shooting took place at 875 Stillwater Ave., around 7 p.m. Sept. 13.

He was a football player at Stamford High School and ran for 977 yards his senior year there. After high school he went to West Point, where he continued his football career, but a shoulder injury limited his time on the field.

He had a troubled upbringing, being homeless and without his parents at 15, but seemed to turn his life around after being adopted by Rose and Barry McInerney. Dixon was friends with the McInerney’s daughter, Lauren.

Dixon’s death added to the number of high school football players from Stamford to die in the past three plus years. At 22, Dixon was the oldest of the four. The others were all from Westhill High School.
