The sound of gunshots filled Stamford’s summer as three men were murdered in the city, and bloodshed became a common occurrence.
The violence began at the end of June when the body of James “Jimmy” Decrescenzo was found beaten to death in Uncle Buck’s Laundromat. The homicide began as a robbery when two men entered the Laundromat that night, and they only killed him when he began to wake up after originally being knocked out. They made off with less than $100, according to police, and said they did it to impress a gang.
Police charged two men with Decrescenzo’s murder at the end of July.
In early July, a shooting took place at a party on Custer Street when Darious Jones, 21, of Stamford, was killed, and three others were injured. The injuries the other victims sustained were considered to not be life-threatening, and the victims have since been released from the hospital.
Several nights later, police found the body of Wyclif Bel-Jean, 21, near Norwalk Hospital. Police theorized he was shot in Stamford, possibly while looking for payback for what happened to Jones, who police say was his friends.
Another man was shot on Stamford’s West Side the same week of the Jones and Bel-Jean murders, but was not killed. Police figured this was part of a different feud going on in the city, and not directly related to the other deaths.
Police increased patrols where the shootings had taken place, which seemed to curtail the violence. But, inl October, a shooting took place in Greenwich police said was related to the earlier incidents.
