Three people were given citations for creating a public disturbance and one was arrested for driving drunk after police received complaints from a lifeguard at West Beach, Stamford Police said.

According to Stamford Police Capt. Diedrich Hohn police were notified of the three drunk and unruly people around 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 5.

Hohn made contact with the head lifeguard John Costello and he said that several families with small children complained to him that two men and a woman were playing loud music, wrestling in the sand, and imitating sexual acts, all in the presence of their children, Hohn said.

Costello also witnessed this behavior and observed that they may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Costello stayed on the phone as Hohn arrived and pointed out the trio.

"From a distance, it could be seen that they were acting inappropriately," Hohn said in a release.

When they realized they were being watched by the police, the three quickly left the beach with police following.

As they were being followed, Hohn saw the vehicle go through a stop sign and begin to traverse the curb line. The 31-year-old driver was then removed from the vehicle and he failed several of the field sobriety tests at the scene. He was arrested for operating under the influence, failure to drive right and failure to obey a stop sign.

"The Stamford Police would like to recognize Head Lifeguard Costello who stayed way past the end of his shift to make sure the police had the necessary information to protect the beachgoers, families, and children from the activities of these three people," said Hohn.
