The woman told police on Tuesday that a man claiming to be an IRS agent called her to tell her she owed $2,600 in back taxes. He told her to buy $2,600 in iTunes gift cards and call him back with the identification numbers on the cards.
The upset woman reported the incident to police on Tuesday once she realized she had fallen victim to the scam, Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said.
The IRS and police agencies have repeatedly warned people that the IRS does not collect money for back taxes that way.
