Stamford Police Roll Out New Crime Scene Van

STAMFORD, Conn. -- The Stamford Police Department has a new crime scene van police said will allow investigators to work more efficiently on the 100-plus crime scenes the department handles annually.

The 2015 Ford Van replaces a 1991 Dodge van the department has used for years. Police said the money to buy the van came from asset forfeiture money confiscated through local and federal criminal investigations in which Stamford police took part.

Police said the new van is the most technologically advanced one available, and it is equipped with the latest DNA collection technology, as well as the most up-to-date technology in evidence collection.

Inside the van is a large work station, and there's also an expandable awning to protect officers while at a crime scene, police said. The van also can provide enough light at a crime scene that no other outside light is needed.

The department's crime scene unit responds to more than 100 cases each year, and is comprised of three investigators with more than 75 years combined experience.

"This van will add to their proficiency in the collection of evidence which in turn will be able to assist investigators and prosecutors with the evidence needed to identify suspects and make more successful prosecutions," Stamford police said in a statement on Facebook.
