At about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, an alarm activated after a burglar threw a rock through a side window at Gofer Ice Cream shop at 869 High Ridge Road, said Sgt. Sean Scanlan.
That in-and-out theft, which Scanlan said lasted just seconds, saw the burglar grab the cash drawer. It contained between $500 and $1,000 in cash, he said.
Sometime between 10 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday, a burglar broke into Michelina's Pizza at 19 Cedar Heights Road by throwing rock through a glass door, police said. In that case, only a small amount of loose change was stolen, police said.
The restaurant is less than a quarter-mile from Gofer's.
That break-in was discovered by an officer who was patrolling in the area and checking on businesses, Scanlan said.
Police don't know yet whether it is the same person who is committing the crimes, he said.
"We're not sure. There's definitely a pattern with using the rock," he said. "The video we have may point to two different people."
Police are keeping an open mind but are also talking to people they know who have committed similar crimes in the past, he said.
"We're still looking at all different angles and speaking to different people who are people of interest to us in these crimes," Scanlan said.
About three weeks ago, five businesses were broken into by someone using a rock to smash glass doors. On Friday, the Verizon store on High Ridge Road was also broken into in a similar smash -and-grab with electronic items stolen from the business.
