STAMFORD, Conn. — A man found smoking pot in a car parked in a handicapped parking place in Stamford was busted with nearly 275 folds of heroin, police said.

The incident began when Officers William Garay and Daniel DeRocco, on routine patrol, spotted the illegally parked car at about 6 p.m. Saturday in the Harbor Point Area, police said.

They found Benjamin Middleton of 24 Central Avenue, Waterbury, sitting in the passenger seat, police said, with a strong smell of marijuana emitting from the vehicle.

Stamford Police Officer Logan Pavia along with his K9 partner Loki further detected the presence of marijuana coming from the vehicle, police said.

Inside the car, officers found paraphernalia commonly used with marijuana along with 200 folds of heroin, about 50 grams worth, police said.

Middleton became aggressive with the officers as he was placed under arrest, police said.

During the arrest, officers found an additional 67 folds of heroin, or about 16 grams, in his possession, police said.

He was charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell and breach of peace.

The parking violation was also addressed with a ticket left from the owner/operator of the vehicle who did not return to the vehicle with all the police activity.

"We know the citizens of Stamford are extremely concerned with the heroin epidemic as are the men of women of the Stamford Police Department," police said in a statement. "We are hopeful that this arrest may save a life."

Anyone with information on any crime or concern is asked to contact the Stamford Police Department at 203-977-4444 or call Stamford Crime Stoppers at 203-977-TIPS.
