The 30-year-old woman was grabbed from behind by a suspect described as an Hispanic man who told the woman he had a knife, police said.
He sexually assaulted her near the track, and then he dragged her to the waterline and sexually assaulted her again, police said. The suspect fled the area, and the woman contacted police a short time later.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic man who is 35 to 40 years old, about 5-foot-7 with a stocky medium build and a protruding stomach, unshaven beard, light skin and speaking English with a Spanish accent, police said.
He was wearing a dark-colored fleece sweatshirt, gym-style shorts, black sneakers, and a dark-colored baseball hat, police said.
The suspect also smelled of alcohol on his breath, police said.
The victim was transported to Stamford Hospital, police said.
The Stamford Police Detective Bureau is working this active investigation, and the ID bureau was dispatched to process the crime scene.
Police are asking that if anyone saw an individual fitting this description in Cove Island Park between 5 and 6 a.m. Friday to call the Stamford Police Detective bureau at 203-977-4417.
Also, if anyone observed this individual in the park area within the last few days they are also urged to call police. All calls will be kept confidential.
