Police said that in the past few months they have received numerous quality of life complaints at Cummings Beach/Park, including loud music, excessive drinking, public drunkenness and more. Most of the complaints were from families with children, and seniors who felt the behavior was deterring them from using the park.
On Sunday, the Patrol Division enacted Quality of Life detail at the park in an effort to curb concerning activity and bring public awareness. Within six hours they issued 38 infraction summonses and three court appearance tickets. Tickets included eight for alcohol in glass containers, possession of hard alcohol, two for possession of marijuana, and an infraction for a female who was urinating in public, police said.
They also cut down on motor vehicle violations. Police said there were many elderly people and young children crossing through a cross walk where there was a stop sign. Several people did not stop at the stop sign and were pulled over, including seven people who did not have licenses, two who had suspended licenses, and a family that did not have a 15-month-old strapped into a child restraint system, police said.
At around 9:30 p.m., officers saw three motorcycles racing through the park at a high rate of speed. They were stopped in the lower parking lot of the park, and all three operators tried to flee, police said. One was apprehended at the scene and the other two left. Police took place in a short pursuit, but it was discontinued due to safety concerns. The apprehended driver was issued a ticket for reckless operation and unsafe passing.
"The Stamford Police will continue these Quality of Life details in all parks and beaches throughout the summer months," police said. "We want the public to know that we are addressing the complaints of the public and your complaints are being taken seriously. We will not let this small percentage of people disrupt the beautiful beaches and parks of this City and this behavior will not be tolerated. The goal of the Stamford Police Department is to make the beaches and parks safe and enjoyable for everyone to enjoy."
