The woman was walking north on Bedford Street near Oak Street at about 1 p.m. Jan 7 when she was attacked from behind, police said. The attacker grabbed her purse and she was thrown to the ground as she fought to hold on to it, police said. The suspect fled with her purse after the brazen daylight attack only a couple of blocks from police headquarters, police said.
The woman suffered a large contusion to her face and was taken to Stamford Hospital. Her iPad, $500 in cash, credit cards and a check book were in her purse, police said.
A break in the case came for Stamford police when the mother of a Stamford High student phoned the victim to say her son had on Jan. 9 had purchased an iPad that belonged to the woman, police said. The son wasn't aware that the iPad was stolen, police said.
The victim called police, who began interviewing several people.
After the investigation, a 16-year-old was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree robbery, second-degree larceny and assault on an elderly woman. The teen was remanded to the Bridgeport Youth Detention Center.
A 14-year-old who acted as a lookout was arrested and charged with accessory to second-degree robbery and accessory to second-degree larceny, police said. The teen was released to his parents.
A third teen is expected to turn himself in, police said.
