Officers responded to the Southwood Square and noticed a man on Montauk Avenue quickly take something out of his pocket and put it in his car as they cruised the area, according to Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin.
Officers stopped the man, Andre Nelson, 27, of 107 Montauk Drive, and found a bag of marijuana containing 4.5 grams in the side door where he had stashed it, Conklin said. During questioning, Nelson admitted another 2.2 grams of pot was in the middle console of the car, he said.
During his arrest, officers found another 29.6 grams of marijuana stashed in Nelson's waistband, along with a loaded .380 automatic weapon, Conklin said.
"He said he was carrying the unregistered gun because of the back and forth crime on the West Side," Conklin said.
The gun would be tested to see whether it had been used in other crimes, he said.
Nelson was charged with possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and carrying an unregistered weapon without a permit. He was held on $100,000 bail.
