Stamford Man Charged With Swinging Metal Rod At Police Officer

STAMFORD, Conn. -- A Stamford man is facing shoplifting and assault charges after attempting to fight off a police officer with a metal rod at Target on Friday, according to the Stamford Advocate.

Authorities were called to Target at approximately 10 p.m. on reports of a shoplifter. Officials approached Handal Merilus, 46, who was holding a metal rod and reportedly swung it at the responding officer, the Stamford Advocate reported. 

Merilus was charged with first-degree robbery, sixth-degree larceny, assault on a police officer and two counts of carrying a dangerous weapon, the Stamford Advocate said.
