Edgar L. Powell, 50, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault and breach of peace, police said.

At about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to a fight on Main Street in Stamford. A 32-year-old man told police he was helping Powell to search for his scooter. However, he said Powell accused him of stealing it and punched him in the face, police said.

Powell was located nearby by officers after firefighters in the area on an unrelated call pointed him out, police said. Powell denied hitting his friend but witnesses to the disturbance backed the younger man's story, police said.
