Police: Stamford Bank Robbery Suspect Claimed He Had Bombs

(Story updated at 1 p.m.) STAMFORD, Conn. — A Waterbury man suspected of robbing Citizens Bank on Atlantic Street on Aug. 31 was arrested Wednesday, a news release from Stamford Police said.

Corey Midgette, 37, passed a note to a bank teller demanding cash and saying he had two bombs, the release said. The teller handed over about $1,000, and the suspect left the bank heading towards Broad Street, the release said.

No bombs were seen by witnesses, police said. Capt. Richard Conklin added that investigators believe the suspect did not have explosives, but he said the threat “shook up” the community and people at the bank.

After leaving the bank, police believe the suspect went to Target and bought clothes and a backpack. He then changed into the new clothes and used the bag to carry out his old clothes, helping him to elude officers, Conklin said.

Investigators singled out Midgette as their suspect after watching security footage, though there wasn’t enough evidence to get a warrant, Conklin said. They later positively matched a partial fingerprint from the note to Midgette, he said.

“We had some pretty good shots of him,” Conklin said. He said the improved quality of surveillance footage helps in two ways: It deters would-be criminals and helps police identify suspects. 

“So many crimes are solved because of [surveillance footage],” he said, explaining that it often provides leads, if not positive identification.

The suspect has been recently released from prison, where he served a sentence for robbery, Conklin said.

Waterbury Police’s Street Crimes Unit apprehended Midgette after being alerted by Stamford Police, the release said.

He was charged with felony first-degree robbery and held on $100,000 bond pending arraignment Wednesday, the release said.
