This story has been updated.

A New Canaan High School assistant basketball coach busted with 20 bags of heroin in Stamford has been fired.

Jose Amor, 30, of Davenport Drive, Stamford, was charged Friday with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell and possession of a controlled substance after police received a call regarding a suspicious person, said Stamford Police Lt. Tom Barcello.

School officials said in a letter to parents that that as of Monday morning, Amor is no longer employed in any capacity by the New Canaan Public Schools.

"Mr. Amor passed the mandatory background check necessary for employment in the New Canaan Public Schools," the school said in a statement sent by email. "His role on our basketball staff was as an assistant coach.

"The New Canaan Public Schools has an extensive background check for all employees and will continue to use this system for all future hires."

Amor, who was charged two years ago with hindering prosecution after tipping off one of his basketball players suspected in a Stamford shooting, was standing outside his vehicle at the West Avenue Shell station when police arrived, according to police.

While speaking with Amor, officers could see a partly opened container on the passenger seat which appeared to have drugs inside. An officer removed the container and found 20 folds of heroin, police said.

Police also found several Percolator painkiller, a pill grinder and a straw with power residue while Amor was being booked.

He was released after posting a $10,000 bond.
