Police told the Stamford Advocate that employees of a Maple Avenue day care called police after 43-year-old Hugo Alex Ortega-Poma arrived to pick up his children and had the odor of alcohol on his breath. The employees told police that Ortega-Poma came with his wife to pick up the kids, and that he drove away with one of the kids on his lap, the Stamford Advocate reported.
Police pulled the car over on Travis Avenue and an officer saw that one fo the children was not in a safety seat, according to the Stamford Advocate. Ortega-Poma failed a field sobriety test and was placed under arrest, according to the Stamford Advocate.
Ortega-Poma was charged with driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, failure to put a child in a safety seat and two felony counts of risk of injury to a child, according to the Stamford Advocate. He also had four active warrants out for failing to appear in court and violating a protective order, police told the Stamford Advocate. He was held on a $50,000 bond.
