Man Caught With Drugs After Car Breaks Down In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — A Stamford man, suspected of dealing drugs, was arrested after police spotted him running around on East Main Street on Wednesday afternoon, Sgt. Richard Gasparino said.

According to Gasparino, here is what happened: Patrol Officers Kevin Lynch and Peter Malanga were driving on East Main Street and saw a vehicle stopped on the median. Its driver, Mariano Corrente, 40, was running in the roadway. As the officers were talking to him, he kept trying to put his hand in the pocket of his sweatshirt after being told not to, and the officers found he had seven folds of heroin in it.

Officers put Corrente in handcuffs, continued to search him and found nine bundles of heroin and a plastic bag with 11 Xanax pills in his pants pocket, Gasparino said. In total, he had about 28.9 grams of heroin, which has a street value of $2,000, and the pills with a street value of $330, he said.

His Nissan Pathfinder had run out of gas, and Corrente was running around because he did know what to do, Gasparino said. The vehicle was towed, he said.

Corrente was charged with possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, and sale of certain illegal drugs, police said. He was held on $500 bond, police said.
