Health Care Aide Charged With Fleecing Stamford Woman With Alzheimer's

STAMFORD, Conn. -- A 36-year-old Bridgeport home health care aide was charged with fleecing of an 81-year-old woman with advanced Alzheimer’s disease out of more than $25,000, Stamford police said.

The Stamford Police Department Financial Crimes Unit arrested Philliann Barnett on larceny and credit card theft charges on Tuesday, Dec. 1, officials report.

Officers in the Financial Crimes Unit undertook the case and quickly discovered that Barnett had committed numerous acts of fraud, which led to losses of over $26,000 to her victim, police said.

After she was hired by the victim’s family, Barnett immediately stole the victim’s identity and opened new cards in her name, according to police.

Barnett also used the victim's pre-existing credit cards and charged personal items on them, police report.

She also withdrew money from the victim’s bank account to pay her own personal bills, according to officials.

Barnett has open cases in Ridgefield and Wilton, and seeks victims with diminished mental capacity, Stamford police report.

She is also suspected of stealing jewelry from her victim in Stamford, officials report.

The charges against Barnett include first-degree larceny, second-degree larceny, credit card theft, first-degree identity theft and third-degree forgery, police said.

Barnett was held on $150,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 15, according to police.

Stamford police said Barnett has also used the following aliases: Nikki Daley, Nikki Barber, Philliann Barber, Philliann Burke.
