STAMFORD, Conn. A former Stamford paralegal pleaded guilty to document fraud Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Hartford, a news release from U.S. Attorney David B. Fein said.
While working in Stamford, Fernando Goncalves, 56, of Brazil, made approximately eight fraudulent submissions while helping people receive immigration benefits, the release said. He was paid more than $7,000 by each immigrant he assisted, the release said.
The forms he filled out with wrong information were applications for permanent residency or to adjust immigration status, the release said.
Goncalves faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000 when he is sentenced Dec. 11, the release said. He has been detained since June 28, when he returned to the U.S. from Brazil, the release said.
