Officer Donald Chen, who also serves with the U.S. Army Reserves, was suspended without pay Dec. 11 for suspected abuse of the department’s military leave policy, for allegedly taking a vacation in Hawaii with his girlfriend while being paid by the department during a supposed deployment with the Reserves, Martin said.
Chen resigned after the allegations surfaced.
“I was appalled and disappointed when I was told what Officer Chen had done," Martin said. "The Stamford Police Department is filled with professional and dedicated members who serve our city with distinction and honor. The action that Officer Chen perpetrated, the betrayal of public trust, is unacceptable but fortunately rare among city employees. I have no tolerance for employees attempting to defraud the system and I fully support the police department in their investigation into Officer Chen. For any city employee who may engage in fraud, impropriety, misconduct, or corruption, my administration will follow through as permitted by law."
