Bhaumik Patel, 30, used a key to enter his ex-girlfriend's apartment at the Woodside Green Apartment complex when she was not at home, police said.
Patel, who was the victim's ex-boyfriend of two years, emerged from her bedroom when she came home, police said. When she began to scream, police said Patel squeezed the victim around her torso, causing her to lose consciousness.
He then placed tape over her mouth and forced her into a chair, police said. After she regained consciousness and pulled the tape off her mouth, he began to cover her mouth with his hand, police said.
The victim’s cellphone rang, and Patel allowed her to answer to calm the caller’s fears, police said. That was enough of a distraction for the victim to run to a neighbor’s apartment and call police, according to the police report. As she was calling police, Patel also called the police to confess to what he had done, police said.
Patel was arrested at the scene and taken to police headquarters, where he told officers that he had planned the invasion because he wanted to talk to the woman about “how she mistreated him” and to “teach her a lesson,” police said. Officers also seized a roll of tape and the apartment keys that were found in Patel’s gym bag, police said.
Patel was charged with home invasion, second-degree burglary, first-degree unlawful restraint, third-degree assault and disorderly conduct. Bond was set at $200,000 for Patel, who was to be arraigned at Stamford Superior Court.
