Elderly Stamford Woman Struck, Killed By Her Own Car

STAMFORD, Conn. -- An 84-year-old woman died after she was struck by the open door of her 2001 Oldsmobile, which rolled down a driveway late Tuesday afternoon, Stamford Police said.

The accident occurred at about 4 p.m. in the parking lot of 2539 Bedford St.

The 84-year-old woman parked her 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue sedan in the driveway of a condominium unit, police said.

She got out of the car and was talking to a neighbor when the Oldsmobile rolled backward on the downgrade of the driveway, police said. The open driver’s door struck both the driver and the pedestrian neighbor, knocking both women to the ground, police said.

Both women were transported by Stamford Emergency Medical Service ambulance to Stamford Hospital. The driver was treated by Stamford Hospital’s Trauma Team but died of her injuries, police said.

The pedestrian was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to be released from the hospital, police said.

The driver’s name was withheld Tuesday evening to allow for the notification of additional family members.

The investigation remains open and any witnesses or persons with information are asked to contact investigating Officer Hugh Mullin at 203-977-4712.
