Cops: Former Stamford Man Stole Half-Brother's Identity

STAMFORD, Conn. — Police charged a former Stamford man suspected of stealing his half-brother’s identity in 2009, Sgt. Andrew Gallagher said.

The victim reported that his information was used to open a cellphone account and a late payment notice from DIRECTV, which he didn’t have, in October 2009, and then a late payment notice from Cablevision about five months later, Gallagher said. He also received a letter from the Department of Labor for a job he didn’t work, the sergeant said.

Police found that the man's Social Security number and date of birth were used to open the accounts, Gallagher said.

Investigators used Cablevision and DIRECTV to see where the service had been provided and took video of the suspect, the sergeant said. The victim identified the suspect as his half-brother Ernst Theodore, Gallagher said.

Theodore moved to the Bronx, N.Y., and police were unable to locate him until Wednesday when he was stopped by State Police in Trumbull, the sergeant said. Stamford police picked him up and charged him with first-degree identity theft, three counts of third-degree identity theft, and four counts of criminal impersonation, police said.

He posted $15,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court May 1.
