The child's foot had been pulled into the side of the escalator at the edge of the step at about 7:50 p.m., the Stamford Fire Department said in a statement. The escalator's automatic emergency stop system had activated, preventing further injury to the child.
Firefighters shut down power to the system and began disassembling the escalator using special equipment that the fire department carries, the statement said. The child was freed within 39 minutes of the first call to the fire department and taken to Stamford Hospital's emergency department for treatment of injuries.
Fourteen firefighters along with police and EMS responded to the scene at the mall.
The extent of the child's injuries were not released.
