The incident began when a BMW sped past a bicyclist on Shippan Avenue, and the bicyclist followed the car onto Rippowam Avenue, police told the Advocate.
The car stopped and the bicyclist, Peter C. Brooks, 60, screamed at the driver, Richard DeGabriel, 55, and spit on him, the Advocate said.
DeGabriel followed Brooks the wrong way on Ponus Avenue, where the car hit the bike's rear tire and knocked Brooks to the ground, police told the Advocate.
Brooks was issued a summons charging him with third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace, the Advocate said.
DeGabriel left the scene but was located and charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree assault, evading responsibility and multiple traffic violations, the Advocate said.
