He was born May 2, 1932, in Brooklyn, to the late Patrick and Mary Ellen Cafferty Mulhern.
Mulhern started his career as an assistant professor of mathematics at Fordham University.
He later worked for Shell Oil in New York, General Foods in White Plains, and James River in Norwalk.
He also taught part time at Hunter College, Pace University, and the University of Connecticut.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Teague Mulhern; two sons, Brian Mulhern (Laura Hines) of New York City and Lawrence, Kan., and Terence (Jennifer) Mulhern of Ridgefield; three daughters, Patricia Mulhern Chamberlin of Weston, Dr. Serena Mulhern (Douglas Derryberry) of Brooklyn, and Jeanne Mulhern of Stamford; one sister, Nancy (Joseph) Murray of Ossining; one sister-in-law, Margaret Leder of Garden City; two brothers-in-law, William Teague of Jersey City, N.J. and Thomas Leder of Garden City; eight grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, at the Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave., Stamford.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 403 Scofieldtown Road, Stamford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, 355 Lexington Ave., 15th Floor, New York, NY 10017, or the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
