STAMFORD, Conn. -- Paul G. Hughes of Stamford died peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 8 at Stamford Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was 69.

He was born in New York City on March 25, 1947, to the late Joseph and Anne Sullivan Hughes. He grew up in Yonkers and graduated with honors from Tolentine High School in the Bronx, Villanova University, and Cornell Law School.

Paul worked his entire professional life as a lawyer specializing in corporate banking and securities regulation, first at Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett, where he met his wife, Maude; then as a partner at Cummings & Lockwood in Stamford for 26 years; and finally for 9 years as a partner at Murtha Cullina in New Haven and Stamford. He was renowned for the integrity of his conduct, the precision of his work, and the kindness with which he treated his colleagues.

Paul is survived by his beloved wife, Maude O’Hara Hughes of Stamford; his son, David Joseph Hughes of Norwalk; and his daughters, Margaret Irene Hughes of Riverdale, N.Y., and Catherine Anne Hughes of Philadelphia. They mourn the loss of a husband and father who took great delight in his family, and to whom he gave a consistent and gracious example of integrity and devotion, as well as the fullness of his love. Paul was an elegant, dedicated, brilliant, self-effacing, compassionate Catholic gentleman whose life was marked by a quiet and abiding love of Christ and His Church.

A funeral procession will leave the Nicholas Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 9:40 a.m. A Solemn Requiem Mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. at the Basilica of St. John the Evangelist, 279 Atlantic Street, Stamford. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Darien. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, Dec. 12 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Paul’s memory to the Basilica of St. John the Evangelist, 279 Atlantic Street in Stamford or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 669 West Avenue in Norwalk. Please join them in praying for the happy repose of his soul.
