Paul Callahan, 81, Past Stamford Finance Chairman

STAMFORD, Conn. – Paul T. Callahan of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Stamford, died Sunday, Sept. 2, in Ocala surrounded by family. He was 81. 

Born Feb. 13, 1931, in Stamford, he was the son of Vincent and Helen Lynch Callahan. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Callahan served the City of Stamford from 1950 under Mayor Walter Kennedy as member of the Board of Representatives.

He was also a member of the City Committee, chairman of the Board of Finance for 12 years, chairman of the Democratic Party and a constable for 19 years.

Callahan was the proprietor of Ridges, Wines and Spirits of Stamford for 35 years. A New York Giants fan, he was a season ticket holder since the "Yale Bowl Days."

He is survived by his wife, Veronica Baxter Callahan, of Ocala; six children, Kevin (Pattie) Callahan, of Stamford, Thomas (MaryAnne) Callahan, of Florida, John (Kimberly) Callahan, of Connecticut, Kathleen Callahan, of Connecticut, Karen Callahan, of Minnesota and Denise (James) Reed, of Colorado; 16 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Vincent, Edmund and Robert Callahan.

Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home in Stamford. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Friday for a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Stamford. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Darien.
