Maria Amparo Michell, 87, Of Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. – Maria Amparo Michell, 87, of Stamford, died Sunday, July 19.

Born May 5, 1928, in Arteaga, Michoacan, Mexico, she was the daughter of writer, poet, artist and self-made businesswoman Aurora Garcia. Her father was Dunstano Morfin, a public servant who dedicated his life to helping the people of Michoacan, Mexico.

She and her husband, Mike, settled in Chicago where they raised four children. She fought for the rights of others including Cesar Chavez's United Farm Workers Union. She was invited to work for the Chicago Department of Human Services as a social worker, and was honored by the office of Mayor Daley for her service.

She is survived by her four children, Henry, Pat, George and Bob; 17 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law in Mexico; a nephew; three nieces; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will take place Sunday, July 26 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and Monday, July 27 from 9-10 a.m. at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford. Interment will immediately follow.
