STAMFORD, Conn. John J. Hogan, a lifelong Stamford resident, died Sept. 7 of cancer. He was 81.
He was born March 27, 1931, in Stamford to Patrick J. and Margaret O'Brien Hogan. He attended Rogers Elementary School and graduated from Stamford High School in 1949. Hogan served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and was a member of the 49th Viking Division.
Hogan received a bachelor's degree in education from the New Haven State Teacher's College in 1954, a master's degree from Fairfield University in 1960 and a Sixth Year Certificate from Fairfield University in 1964.
He began his teaching career at Newfield School and also taught at Stark, Rogers and Franklin schools in Stamford and Royle School in Darien. Hogan taught English as a second language for the Adult Education Program in Stamford for 22 years.
He was a member of the Gen. Philip Sheridan division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians for more than 60 years, serving as an officer and promoting Irish causes. He also served on the Patriotic and Special Events Commission in Stamford. He was a lifelong baseball fan.
Hogan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marjorie Serafin Hogan; three daughters, Janet Hogan (J.R.) McMullen, of Stamford, Paula Hogan, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Carolyn Hogan (Jim) Leary, of Worcester, Mass.; two sisters, Margaret Hogan Ryan, of Stamford, and Irene Hogan (Ron) DeCamp of Brewster, Mass.: a brother, Frank (Marge) Hogan, of Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitiation is from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Stamford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Maurice Roman Catholic Church in Stamford. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Darien.
