Gladys Barkas, 90, Retired Teacher, Of Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. – Gladys Rose Hodes Barkas of Stamford, formerly of Bayside, N.Y., died Tuesday, Jan. 8. She was 90.

Barkas was born Dec. 25, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She attended Thomas Jefferson High School and Brooklyn College. She later earned a master’s degree from Queens College.

She taught kindergarten at P.S. 146 in Horward Beach, Queens, N.Y. She enjoyed tennis, community singing, her many friends, and her family.

Barkas was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Dr. William Barkas; a son, Seth Alan Barkas; and a brother, Dr. Selig Hodes. She is survived by a sister, Peggy Silver; two daughters, Eileen (Richard) Hoffman and Jan (Fred) Yager; a daughter-in-law, Karen Lobovits; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. 

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Stamford. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, N.Y.
