STAMFORD, Conn. – George Bongiorno, a lifelong resident of Stamford, died Sunday, March 13. He was 86.

Bongiorno was born in Stamford on Jan. 18, 1930, to John and Rose Borchetta Bongiorno.

After serving in the Navy, he came back to Stamford and began opening a series of businesses, including a supermarket, gas station, carwash and liquor store, among others.

Bongiorno also was an avid horseman, who owned Red Barn Stables in North Stamford and ranches in Texas and Arizona.

He was an active member of the community, donating time and money to local charities and earning the title of honorary deputy chief from the Stamford Police Department.

Bongiorno was predeceased by his parents; a daughter Lynnae; two brothers, Frank and John; and a sister, Marie Berry.

He is survived by his wife, Marie (Palmer) Bongiorno; four children, Bridjay Capone and her husband, Joe, Michele Nizzardo and her husband, Maurice, John Bongiorno and FrankBongiorno; a sister Beatrice Sapia; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, March 19, at 10 a.m. at St. Leo Parish, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford.

Interment will be private.

The Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
