Donald L. Townsend, 88, Of Stamford, WWII Veteran

STAMFORD, Conn. - Donald Louis Townsend, Jr. of Stamford died March 12. He was 88.

Townsend was born May 15, 1925, in Rochester, New York, the son of Noel and Donald L. Townsend, Sr. He graduated from New Trier High School and Northwestern University, both of the Chicago area. Upon graduation from Northwestern he entered the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Headquarters of the 88th Infantry Division in Northern Italy where he supervised G.I.s and Italian civilians who were responsible for maintaining peace with Tito's Yugoslavia after World War II.

Following his commitment to the Army, he spent 22 years in the consumer products industry with Union Carbide Corporation and The Borden Company. He spent the rest of his career in the telecommunications/computer products and services industry with GTE Corporation and Quotron Systems Incorporated. After 45 years as a sales and marketing executive, he retired and joined Greenwich Research Associates. Townsend was a congregant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Riverside where he served as vestryman, co-chaired the Fair For All fundraiser, headed up the ushers group and served as chairman of the Stewardship Committee for several years. As a resident of Edgehill in Stamford, he was elected president of the Resident Council and later sang with the Greenwich Choral Society. He has been a member of Innis Arden Golf Club for more than 50 years.

Townsend is survived by his wife, Marjorie Lowry Townsend; children, Donald L. Townsend, III, Elizabeth Bennett Townsend, Madeleine Townsend Mandelbaum and Stephen Randolph Townsend; 11 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 21 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Riverside. A gathering following the service will take place at Innis Arden Golf Club in Old Greenwich.
