STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford resident Calvin Sylvester Birch Sr., died on Thursday, May 5. He was 90.

The son of Moses Birch and Rita Braxton, Birch grew up in Camden, New Jersey with four older sisters and brothers. After graduating high school, he served in the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate.

Following his service to his country, Birch moved to Bridgeport and then Stamford to work for the Board of Education, where he retired at 65 as the head custodian.

He enjoyed retirement for six months before being motivated to work as a bus driver for Stamford schools, and later, Student Transportation of America. He held this position until his death.

Birch is survived by his children, Calvin Jr., Craig, Tina, Darlene, and Keith, who all live in Stamford, as well as children Bruce Payne and Alonzo White and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He also is survived by daughter-in-laws Claire, Brenda, and Rosemary. During his second marriage to Geraldine Birch, he inherited children Valerie, Rudolph, and Gregory, along with daughter-in-laws Laura and Daisy.

Birch was predeceased his parents and four siblings.

A wake will be held on Monday, May 9 from 4-8 p.m. at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer St., Stamford. 

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 10 at Bethel AME Church, 150 Fairfield Ave., Stamford. 

There will be a viewing from 10-11 a.m. and the funeral services will begin at 11 a.m.
