Betty J. Skovgaard, 95, Of Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. – Betty J. Skovgaard, 95, of Stamford, died on Monday, Jan. 12.

She was born in Omaha, Neb., on Nov. 22, 1919, to Charles and Clara Miller Knox.

Skovgaard graduated from Iowa State University and received her master’s degree in dietetics from the University of Washington.

She served as a dietitian at the University of Connecticut in Storrs during the early 1940s while her husband was overseas in the Navy during World War II. She also worked in Omaha as a chemical analyst for the war effort.

She was a longtime resident of the Roxbury Community. She helped found the Roxbury Community Association, whose hall was home for the Roxbury Nursery School where she taught when her children were young. She was also a charter member of the Roxbury Swim and Tennis Club. As a member of the club's board of directors, she served as the membership chair for three years. For almost 20 years, Skovgaard worked in the office of Dr. Robert S. Fields, a dentist, until her retirement in 1989. She was a longterm volunteer at Stamford Hospital and the Tully Center. She enjoyed bowling, tennis, bridge and was an avid fan of the UConn men's and women's basketball teams.

She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Oscar Skovgaard, Jr.; by a sister in Texas; and a brother in Hot Springs, Ark.. She is survived by her three children, Charles E. Skovgaard of Surry, Maine; Kristie L. Skovgaard of Deer Island, Oregon; and Robert A. Skovgaard of Stamford. She had four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no memorial service. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice
