Winter Tears Up Stamford Streets

Vroom, vroom, thud, vroom, vroom, thud. That is a common sound heard on Stamford’s Oaklawn Avenue as vehicles routinely hit one of the many potholes on the street. Oaklawn is not the only street in the city that has pothole problems after this past winter took its toll on the city's thoroughfares.

“[The winter] really wreaked havoc on our roadways,” Ernie Orgera, Stamford’s director of operations, said of the potholes in town.

The phones have been ringing off the hook with people complaining of potholes after a winter of 70 inches of snow, Orgera said. Once the winter weather broke, about 100 complaints a week were coming in, but the number of calls has diminished as repairs have been made. About 40 fixes are being made a week and eventually all of the potholes will be filled, Orgera says.

Orgera was unsure of the exact number of complaints received. Frank Fedeli of the Citizens Service Center did not return ca call for comment.
