Valentine Will Field Bids as Auctioneer

Major League Baseball's Bobby Valentine will help aid local animal charities by auctioning off public artwork that has been perched throughout the city this summer. The "It's Reigning Cats & Dogs" Auction will take place Sept. 15 at Seven Landmark Square, 101 Broad St., at 5:30 p.m.

Valentine, a former Major League Baseball player and manager, now works as a baseball analyst for ESPN. The Stamford native, who graduated from the former Rippowam High School, will share auctioneer duties with Laurie Guzda McEvoy.

Auctioned works will be drawn from 40 Fiberglas cat and dog sculptures designed and decorated by 34 area artists. They include Susan Waldinger's "Everyone's Best Friend," a dog embellished with unique handprints; Eddie Nino's "Corn Dog," a dog with corn kernels and husk; and Pamela Riley-Abear's "In the Dog House," featuring a pet with its own house.

The Stamford Downtown Special Services District is sponsoring the event. Part of the proceeds will benefit the Stamford Dog Park, OPIN and Friends of Felines. The auction is open to the public for a fee of $40 per person. Those wishing to participate are asked to RSVP by Sept. 1.
