Turnout Varies at Stamford Polls

Voter turnout ranged from light to heavy at three Stamford polling places Tuesday morning, according to informal traffic counts. "People were lined up waiting to get in at 6 a.m.," said District 11 Moderator Peter Zonis.

"We've been busier than normal. It's been steady all morning," he said at the Stark School gymnasium at 9:30 a.m.

At Stamford High School, longtime Assistant Registrar Mickey Raimondi said just the opposite. "It's been very light, not a heavy turnout at all." At 10 a.m. there had been a total of 649 voters, which Raimondi said was "down from two years ago."

At the Roxbury School, District 17 voters came in "an even flow," according to one of the poll watchers.

Longtime Stamford residents Marion and Irwin Ganz have been voting for 60 years and they were out this morning as well. "We generally vote along party lines, but not always," Marion said.

Both Republican and Democratic Party officials expected the turnout to pick up substantially toward the end of the day and after people get out of work.
