Train Hits Car in Stamford; Service Suspended

STAMFORD, Conn. — Train service was suspended on Metro-North’s New Canaan branch Thursday morning after a train hit a car at Riverbend Drive near Hope Street, NBC Connecticut said.

No one was seriously hurt in the 5:30 a.m. accident, but it was causing problems for commuters as the scene was cleared, NBC reported. There are no gates at the crossing. The crash was near the Springdale station.

Bus service was being provided, departing from the New Canaan train station and making all stops to downtown Stamford, where commuters could transfer for train service. It was not clear how long train service would be stopped.

The car involved was driven by an Advocate newspaper carrier, according to The Advocate. The accident took place on the tracks in front of the Riverbend South office complex, which includes the Advocate newsroom.

The train was used for carrying equipment, and no passengers were on board, according to the Metropolitan Transit Authority.
