Stamford's Ferguson Library Makes a Wish

Stamford’s Ferguson Library would love to win the voting in Santa’s Wish List holiday promotion, says Linda Avellar, the library’s communications supervisor. “The bad economy has caused us to cut back some library hours and a few of the adult programs.”

Founded in 1877 with a bequest from John Day Ferguson and officially chartered by the state in 1880, the Ferguson, as it’s known, has been a leader in providing library services to the public for more than 125 years.

Serving more than 1 million visitors a year, the Ferguson is committed to the principal of providing free and equal access to information.

In 1940, the Ferguson started the first Bookmobile, and in 1995 it was the first library in the state to offer free Internet service to visitors.

In 2004, free WiFi was added and the free online “Homework Help” service offered.

In addition to the main library at Bedford and Broad Streets, the Ferguson has three branches in Stamford to serve users from lower Fairfield County. While funding is down, use of the Ferguson is up. Last year, the library set a record, circulating 1.1 million articles.
