Stamford's Carmine Uva, WWII Vet, Carpenter

Carmine Uva was a decorated World War II veteran who enlisted in the U.S. Navy three days before his 18th birthday. His awards and honors for valiant service included the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Victory Medal.

This month, six decades after fighting for his country, Uva lost his battle with cancer. He was 84.

Uva was born May 5, 1926, and attended Stamford public schools. He enlisted in the Navy on May 2, 1944, and served in the Pacific on the USS Natoma Bay CUE 62. Uva was honorably discharged May 19, 1946.

He was a skilled carpenter who worked for major companies, including Home Craft Builders, Capital Records and Clairol, his final employer before his retirement in 1993. Uva was an all-around sports fan who especially enjoying following UConn's basketball team and the New York Giants.

Uva is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathleen; son, William; and a granddaughter and many other family members and friends. Memorial donations may be made to the Bennett Cancer Center, 30 Shelburne Road, Stamford, CT 06902.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Dec. 13 in Stamford.
