George Ducanic, the southwestern Fairfield County coordinating officer for the program, which is run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, said Toys for Tots in the area really needs more help this year as he has more than 100 families plus other organizations asking for help. The past two years the area has had about 50 to 60 families in need.
“Get into the Christmas spirit,” he said adding that there are plenty of boxes throughout Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, and New Canaan for people to drop off donations.
Over the past four years the area has collected an average of 20,000 toys per year, he said. “The city of Stamford always comes through,” Ducanic said.
The mayor also took the time to remind people to thank veterans for their service Friday, the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. “It was a shot sent through our nation,” Pavia said.
Providing entertainment for the tree lighting was the Government Center Singers, city employees who donned Santa hats and other Christmas garb, and sang traditional holiday songs including “Here Comes Santa Claus,” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
