Stamford Students To Join Working World

STAMFORD, Conn. — Hubert Buissereth will be working on website development for Conair this summer. It's a job the Stamford teenager has wanted since he was 4 and his father brought home his family's first computer.

“I used to watch over his shoulder,” the 16-year-old Stamford High School student said. “I learned a lot from him.”

Hubert is one of 30 students who earned jobs in Stamford through the Mayor’s Youth Employment Program. The program was created in March to give students an opportunity to gain experience and offer summer help to Stamford-based companies and organizations. “All of you did what everyone is talking about doing, you’ve created jobs,” Mayor Michael Pavia said, thanking the sponsors and mentors of the program.

Some of the students in the program, including Hubert, will be gaining experience in a field in which they are interested. But others are undecided about their futures. Hiram Holloway is one of the latter. He was placed with Capital Financial Management, where he will be taking on entry-level accounting tasks such as making spreadsheets and organizing files. “It’s a great opportunity for experience,” Hiriam said, who is happy to be working this summer.

Pavia hosted a reception for the 30 interns as well as the sponsors and parents at the Stamford Government Center on Thursday night. The reception gave the people involved a chance to learn more about the program and to meet each other.

The students spent several days this week in training and learning how to develop workplace skills, including teamwork and leadership. They will enter the workforce Monday morning and will work part time until Aug. 11. The program ends when the students make presentations about their jobs to the mayor on Aug. 12.
