Stamford Residents Not Sold on Lower Gas Prices

Stamford resident Steve May has noticed that gas prices are dropping, but he is not seeing a big difference yet. “It’s going to be $70, and I am not paying any more,” Steve May said as he shut off the pump at the Citgo station at the Food Bag on Hope Street.

May was one of several motorists fueling up who believes the lower prices won’t last long. Many said they believe the prices will stabilize or rise, as they traditionally do during the summer.

“The lower they go the better, especially with the holiday weekend coming up,” Keely Norton said as she tended to her daughter and pumped gas. Steve Loveless agreed. “The demand for gas is higher in the summer,” he said.

The Citgo Corp. has kept the prices at the Food Bag gas station among the lowest in the city at $4.23 per gallon. Even the Food Bag’s manager John Scharf is unsure how prices will change as summer approaches. But he knows the prices at his station will remain competitive. “You can’t predict how it will go,” Scharf said from behind the counter at the convenience store. “Prices go up faster than they go down.”

The average gas price in Connecticut is $4.13 per gallon for regular gas, which is down from about $4.27 per gallon May 11, ConnecticutGasPrices.com says. The average price of $4.27 per gallon was the highest Connecticut has seen since July 2008, when prices were just less than $4.38 per gallon.

The national average has dropped to $3.80 per gallon for regular gas from about $3.96 per gallon May 11, ConnecticutGasPrices.com says.
