Stamford Post Office May Be Closed

STAMFORD, Conn. — The Glenbrook Post Office is among 15 in Connecticut that face possible closure as the U.S. Postal Service conducts a study to determine customers' needs.

“Our customer’s habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business,” Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said in a statement. People use the Internet, smartphones and other locations such as grocery stores for their postal needs, the statement said.

“The Postal Service of the future will be smaller, leaner and more competitive, and it will continue to drive commerce, serve communities and deliver value,” Donahoe said.

The other offices in Connecticut up for closure include three in Hartford, three in New Haven, two in Waterbury, two in Bridgeport, and one each in Gillman, Ballouville, Bristol and West Haven. About 3,700 stations nationwide are being looked at by the postal service.

The postal service does not receive tax dollars for operating expenses and is funded by the sale of postage, products and services, the statement said.
