Stamford Official Urges Vigiliance

The death of Osama bin Laden should not lead Americans to drop their guard, a Stamford official says. Chris Munger, special assistant to the mayor for emergency planning and training, said Monday he fears al Qaida will attempt to attack the U.S. for killing its leader.

“The only way they’ve made statements in the past is when property is destroyed, and/or people are killed,” Munger said.

Like everyone else, Munger does not know if, when, how or where al Qaida will make its next move against the U.S., but he says people should be ready and alert. He added that people should report anything out of the ordinary to authorities.

Munger, a retired FBI agent, was hired by Mayor Michael Pavia in February to assist in emergency preparedness.  Part of his job includes starting an anti-terrorism unit and a Community Emergency Response Team.

“The unexpected is what we need to prepare for,” Pavia said describing Munger’s position.

Though Munger was worried about what al Qaida might do to retaliate, he commended the Navy Seals for the job they did. The former federal agent said that while he never took part in a similar mission, he knows it took perfect execution for it to succeed.

“It was a great operation -- it was a great job,” Munger said.
