Stamford Manager Biting Nails Over New Taxes

STAMFORD, Conn. — On Friday, many new state laws will go into effect in Connecticut, including a tax on manicures, pedicures and other nail services. The new tax on nail services has Jim Huang worried that customers may stop coming into Fashion Nail & Spa in Stamford.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea,” Huang, manager of the nail parlor, said as he gave a woman a manicure, “The customers won’t like it.”

He was right about the pulse of his customers. Several said they were fortunate and lucky to get their manicures done on June 30 before the tax went into effect. However, they wondered what they would do when it was time for their next manicures.

In addition to manicures and pedicures, many other services not previously taxed in Connecticut will start being taxed at 6.35 percent. Those services include pet grooming, motor vehicle towing and road services other than repairs, and packing and crating other than provided in stores.

The state's new fiscal year also brings the elimination of several previously tax-exempted products, including clothing and shoes under $50, nonprescription drugs and medications, and yoga instruction at yoga studios. The tax will be 6.35 percent as well for those products and services.

In addition to the new taxes, the state has also increased taxes on items and services as well. The increased taxes include cars costing more than $50,000, which will see an increase to 7 percent, and short-term car rentals will now be taxed at 9.35 percent — both up from 6 percent. Hotel and lodging stays of less than 30 days will be taxed at 15 percent instead of 12 percent.
