Stamford Man Suspected of Beating Over Cigarettes

STAMFORD, Conn. — Police arrested a man who is suspected of strangling a woman Thursday night, Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said.

The victim told officers she got into an argument with the suspect, Channin Mills, 26, of Stamford after she refused to buy him cigarettes, and he threw her on the couch and held her down, Shawinsky said. Mills then fled her apartment and was arrested later at his Hanover Street residence, the sergeant said.

Mills, who appeared in court Tuesday, was charged with third-degree assault, risk of injury to a child, disorderly conduct and third-degree strangulation, police said.
