Stamford Man Sentenced for Illegally Entering U.S.

STAMFORD, Conn. — Former Stamford resident Carlos David Vanegas-Gomez, 39, was sentenced to 57 months in jail for illegally re-entering the country, a statement from U.S. Attorney David B. Fein’s office said. The sentence came last week from Senior U.S. District Judge Ellen Bree Burns in New Haven.

Vanegas-Gomez was deported in 2009 after he was convicted of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl, the statement said. About six months after his deportation, he returned to the United States, the statement said.

On July 19, 2010, he was convicted of failure to register as a sex offender and violating his previously imposed state probation. He was sentenced to 25 months in Superior Court in Stamford and is currently held in state custody.

The native of Guatemala pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful entry to the United States on April 7.
