Stamford is Ready for Irene, Mayor Says

STAMFORD, Conn.—Stamford is prepared for Hurricane Irene, Mayor Michael Pavia said during a press conference Friday afternoon. Irene is on pace to hit the city on Sunday, and is expected to be a Category One hurricane at that time, Weather.com said.

“Hopefully Irene goes somewhere else, but if it does come, we’ll be ready,” the Mayor said during his explanation of what precautions the city is taking. He was joined by many other city officials who are working to keep the city and its residents safe from Hurricane Irene.

The city will open Stamford High School at 5 p.m. on Saturday for residents living in areas at risk for floods. It is recommended to go to the shelter and not mandatory, Pavia said. Other schools are ready to be opened as shelters if there is a need, Anne Fountain, director of public health, said.

Ernie Orgera, director of operations, has moved the city trucks and equipment to its Haig Avenue Garage to be at higher elevation. He also said operations will close roads, the transfer stations, parks, and marinas on Saturday. Garbage pickup is currently scheduled to take place as scheduled on Saturday.

Stamford Fire and Rescue will set up four or five task forces — which include two engine trucks, an ambulance, and a front liner, so they can clear areas and take care of fires and other disasters, acting chief Antonio Conte said. He added that they will monitor the Shippan and Cove areas, which are most at risk for flooding.
